C3 Research – a SKA of the Social Sciences?
On 11 February 2014, a group of DST-NRF SARChI Research Chairs met at UCT to discuss their research areas and identify gaps relevant to key C3 themes – inequality, labour markets and regulation, inclusive growth, spatial economy, urban/rural issues, education, health, social cohesion and communities.
The chairs were mandated by the C3 Think Tank to develop a research agenda with a strong interdisciplinary focus for a two-year work programme as a major prong of the C3 initiative. This could be seen as the beginning of an SKA of the Social Sciences, focused on the most burning socio-economic problems facing South Africa today. The NRF has committed in principle to initial funding, and to consider a longer-term budget proposal.
