UNESCO Chair in Community Health Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education, Dr Rajesh Tandon, spoke on 'Knowledge Democracy: Reclaiming Voice for All' at the Vice-Chancellor's Open Lecture on 26 August 2014. In his lecture, Dr Tandon commended Dr Price's strategic initiatives at UCT as providing the foundation for engaged scholarship addressing the key challenges in South Africa. Stressing that universities have a critical role to play in producing active, informed and ethical citizens through teaching from the perspective of a knowledge democracy, Dr Tandon proposed that society should interrogate the idea of the knowledge economy in a way that allows for democratic and equitable production, dissemination, and use of knowledge.
