Youth Conversations for Action: Towards a Basic Package of Support for Youth

Hosted by the University of Cape Town’s Poverty & Inequality Initiative; University of Johannesburg’s Centre for Social Development in Africa; UCT’s Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Programme to Support Pro-poor Policy Development in the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; the DG Murray Trust; and the Nelson Mandela Foundation as part of the Mandela Initiative. The aim of the gathering was to discuss the options for “A basic package of support for youth” based on the outcome of the first conversation earlier in the same year. Hosted by UCT’s Poverty & Inequality Initiative and the Bertha Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UCT’s Graduate School of Business (GSB), the Programme to Support Pro-poor Policy Development in the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, the Economies of Regions Learning Network of the Government Technical Advisory Centre and the Nelson Mandela Foundation as part of the Mandela Initiative. The aim of the workshop was to identify and agree on the content of a basic package of youth support; and to design a research and policy agenda to understand the components and cost of such a package given the interventions already in place, and their levels of effectiveness. Policy Dialogue on Youth, Inequality and the Labour Market

Jointly convened by the Poverty & Inequality Initiative (PII) and the Research Project on Employment, Income Distribution and Inclusive Growth (REDI3x3) to bring policymakers and researchers together to to think collaboratively about the drivers of youth unemployment and about possible policy interventions that could begin to shift the situation. It was attended by researchers, policymakers and representatives of non-governmental organisations who aim to help young people make the difficult transition between school and employment.

Policy Workshop on Youth and the Intergenerational Transmission of Poverty
16 November 2015

Hosted by the Poverty and Inequality Initiative and the Children's Institute, both based at UCT. The key focus of this policy workshop was the role played by the education system in either entrapping or freeing youth from the circumstances of poverty. The main aim was to discuss the policy implications of the evidence about the conditions of youth in the country, as was published in the South African Child Gauge 2015 - the presentation on the findings at the event can be viewed here.

Youth Colloquium
29 - 30 August 2014

Addressing the theme 'Youth in South Africa: Uncertain Transitions in a Context of Deprivation'. A short video clip was created by one of the participants, Janco Damas, featuring footage from the Colloquium. The full report is available here
